SESSION 6 & 7:
TARGETING YOUR JOB
SEARCH
Targeting your job search" means focusing on
specific jobs that match what you like and what
you're good at. Instead of applying everywhere,
you choose jobs that fit your skills and interests.
This helps you find a job you'll enjoy and do well in,
making your search more successful.
We need to target our job search to:
1. Save Time: Focusing on specific jobs and companies helps you
avoid wasting time on roles that don't fit your skills or interests.
2. Increase Success: Applying to jobs that match your skills and goals
increases your chances of getting hired.
3. Stand Out: When you tailor your resume and applications to specific
jobs, employers see that you're a good fit, making you more likely to
get noticed.
4. Get the Right Job: Targeting helps you find a job that aligns with
your career goals and passions, leading to more job satisfaction.
5. Be More Confident: When you know what you want, you can
approach your job search with more focus and confidence.

Activity Title: Setting SMART Goals for Your Job Search
Objective:
To help participants create clear, actionable, and effective SMART goals that
will guide their job search process.
Materials Needed:
● Pen and paper or a digital device for writing
● A list of job types you’re interested in
● Access to job search resources (e.g., job boards, company websites)
Instructions:
1. Introduction to SMART Goals:
○ Review what SMART stands for: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant,
and Time-bound.
○ Discuss why setting SMART goals is important for a successful job search.
2. Identify Your Job Target:
○ Write down the specific job you are targeting (e.g., “Registered Nurse at a big
hospital”).
○ Example: "I want to get a job as a Registered Nurse in a large hospital."
3. Create a SMART Goal:
● Use the SMART criteria to create a detailed goal for your job search.
Follow these steps:
a. Specific:
● Ask yourself: What job do I want? Where do I want to work?
● Example: "I want to secure a Registered Nurse position in the emergency
department of a large hospital in my city."
b. Measurable:
● Ask yourself: How will I track my progress?
● Example: "I will apply to 3 hospitals per week and follow up with each
application within 7 days."
c. Achievable:
● Ask yourself: Is this goal realistic? Do I have the qualifications?
● Example: "I will complete an advanced certification in emergency nursing
within 3 months to improve my qualifications."
d. Relevant:
● Ask yourself: Does this goal match my career aspirations?
● Example: "I want to work in a large hospital because I enjoy a fast-paced
environment and want to help many patients."
e. Time-bound:
● Ask yourself: When do I want to achieve this goal?
● Example: "I aim to start working as a Registered Nurse in a large hospital
within 6 months."
Write Your Goal:
● Combine your answers into a full SMART goal.
● Example: "I want to secure a Registered Nurse position in the
emergency department of a large hospital in my city by
applying to 3 hospitals each week, completing an advanced
certification in emergency nursing within 3 months, and
starting the job within 6 months."
Reflection:
● Think about your SMART goal and how it will help guide your job
search.
● Write down any challenges you might face and how you plan to
overcome them.
