Computer literacy is the knowledge and ability to use computers and allied technology efficiently.
Computer literacy covers a range of skills from elementary use to programming and complex problem
solving issues. A useful component of computer literacy is the understanding of how computers work and
operate. Knowledge of basic computer skills is also regarded as an essential asset in most countries giving
its owner significant edge in employment and educational applications. An extended definition of
computer literacy describes it as the ability to self-teach or learn new programmes as they are
encountered. Some people also regard a computer literate person as someone who can use a variety of
particular applications like Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Internet Explorer and Microsoft
Outlook, for certain simple tasks.
To be computer literate, a series of skills are needed. These skills are broadly divided into three - basic,
intermediate, and advanced. Basic computer skills consist of knowing how to power on a computer, being
able to use a mouse to interact with items on the monitor screen, and being able to shut down the
computer properly after use. Intermediate skills involves the knowledge of word processing, how to use E-
mail, how to use the internet, installing software and navigating a computer file system. Advanced skills
comprises of programming, data security, use of computer for scientific research and repairing computer
hardware.
Computer literacy is of immense benefit to the modern world. In composing or writing words, computers
are fast. In communicating, computer works faster than pen, paper and typewriter because it can
duplicate and store information. You can also easily edit your work. Computers have big memory. You can
store a whole lot of information from books, music and films to E-mails and journals. One of the most
valuable use of computers is the ability to give access to a universe of information that has been buried for
thousand of years from regions of people. Information can be obtained in the twinkling of an eye, in fact,
in micro second or less.
Modern large scale manufacturing will be very complex, if not impossible, but for the computers. Many
sophisticated machines used in the production of toys, cars, medicines, food, text books, textiles etc are
computerized or computer aided. Virtually everything in the modern world has a touch of computers.
Imagine our world without computer, such imagination may take us back to the stone age. Even a
smattering of computer literacy is needed to operate your cell phone. Hence, many educational and
government institutions have made it mandatory for every citizen or student to be computer literate.

PART 1: COMPREHENSION
Read the passage below carefully and answer the questions on it by choosing the correct answer from the
options lettered A-D.
Answer all questions

My father, a principled man was known for what he represented. His ‘yes’ was constantly ‘yes’ and his ‘no’
was also rigid. He could take everything from us except going out to play with other children in the
moonlight. Every night, he made sure we lock our door and sleep before going to his bed. Despite that, he
would come often in the night to check if we had violated his instruction. We could not enjoy the nights
especially when we heard other children playing outside. We considered our father to be a very wicked
man for such treatment.
Months later, our uncle brought his children to spend their holiday with us. Those two cousins of ours
grew up in the city and could not live in isolation as our father wanted us to. They found that kind of life
style strange and tried to figure out solution to it.
Many plans were suggested but the acceptable one was to lock the door inside and come out through the
window so that our father, when checked, would think we were sleeping inside the room. We did this for
many days and our father could not discover because we could push the window back carefully.
One day, our father came outside at night to ease himself and, in the process, saw a big snake at the
balcony. Of course he needed something to kill the snake which was consuming our chickens. He quickly
remembered his big cutlass which I used to keep in our room. He, then, dashed to our room to knock at
our door. For a long time, no one opened the door. He carefully examined the window and discovered it
was not locked. Peeping inside the room, he saw no one. “This children think they are more sensible than I
am” he said.
Indeed we had enough fun on that day and could not return until we were feeling dizzy. On reaching
home, we saw a heap of cane in front of our father who was waiting for us. None of us forgave our father
for his treatment to us that day. We, then understood that there are many days for a thief but that single
one for the owner is always paramount.
