Introduction to Electrical Engineering
Time: 3 Hours Max. Marks: 100

2. Answer any five questions choosing one full question from each unit.

01 a) With a neat diagram, explain the working of nuclear power plant. 6 4 1 1,2

c) A circuit of two resistors 10 and 20 in series are connected in parallel with
50 resistor. If the current through any one of the resistor is 2A.
Find: i) Current through other resistor.
ii) Voltage applied across the combination.
iii) Total power consumed.
iv) Power consumed by each resistor. 8 3 1 1,2

02 a) With a neat single line diagram explain the various stages of power transmission
and distribution system. 6 2 1 1,2
b) State and explain Ohm’s law and its limitations. 6 4 1 1,2
c) Find the current through 2 resistor of the circuit shown in Figure 2(c).

03 a) Sketch the sinusoidal wave form and for the same define the following:
i) Instantaneous value ii) RMS value iii) Form factor iv) Power factor 8 2 2 1,2
b) Show that the current through pure inductive circuit lags the applied voltage by
90° and average power consumed is zero. Draw the waveforms of current, voltage

c) Discuss the advantages and limitations of three phase AC power. 4 3 2 1,2

04 a) A series R-L-C circuit with R=50, L=20mH and C=10F is excited with a 300V,
50Hz supply.
Find : i. Impedance ii. Current ii. Power iv. Power factor v. Reactive power 6 3 2 1,2
b) An inductive coil takes a current of 10A from a supply of 100V, 50Hz and lags the
voltage by 30°. Calculate i) Parameters of the circuit ii) Power factor iii) Active,
reactive and apparent power. 8 3 2 1,2
c) Three coils having resistance of 20 and inductance of 0.2H are connected in star
across 440V, 50Hz, three phase supply. Calculate the line current, power factor
and total power consumed. 6 2 2 1,2

05 a) Explain the constructional features of a D.C. motor / Generator using a neat cross
sectional view. 8 2 3 1,2
b) A 4 pole DC shunt motor takes a line current of 22.5A from 230V supply.
Ra=0.5 and Rsh=125 the armature is wave wound with 300 conductors, if flux
per pole is 0.2wb,
Calculate: i) Speed ii) Torque developed iii) Power developed.

d) A 120V DC shunt motor has an armature resistance of 0.2 and field resistance of
60. It runs at 2000 rpm taking a full load current of 40A. Find the speed on half

07 a) With usual notations, derive an e.m.f. equation of a transformer. 6 3 4 1,2
b) Explain the working of transformer on no-load, with a neat circuit representation
and vector diagram and discuss the components of no-load current. 8 3 4 1,2
c) A 4 pole 50Hz, 3 induction motor has a slip of 1% at no load, when operated at
full load the slip is 2.5%. Find the no-load and full load speeds. Find the change in
r.p.m. from no load to full load. 6 3 4 2

08 a) Explain various losses in the transformer and discuss the methods to minimize them. 6 3 4 1,2
b) Explain how rotating magnetic field is produced in the air gap between starter and
rotor of 3 induction motor, with a neat phases representations. 8 2 4 1,2
c) A 3 induction motor with a 4-pole is supplied at 60Hz, three phase supply.
Calculate : i) Synchronous speed
ii) Speed when slip is 4%.
iii) Frequency of the rotor emf at 600 rpm. 6 3 4 1,2
