“Living on One Dollar" is a documental into the daily struggles faced by people living in
poverty in Guatemala. The film shows college students who get into a rural Guatemalan
village, so they try to live like the people of Guatemala based on just one dollar (obvious
extreme poverty).

This experience shows us the difficult and crude reality that these people live and all the
difficulties they face every day without the ability to choose their destiny, these people have
dreams like any other but the difference is that they are very limited, they have to choose
between working from a very young age to support their family or go to school to continue
their academic life and dreams, the minority of people choose the second option. This
highlights not only the challenges of meeting basic needs but also the resilience and
creativity of those living in such conditions.

The students struggled to meet basic needs such as food, clean water, and medical care,
which are often covered in wealthier societies, giving them certain greater privileges that
many of the people in the community cannot access. Just as these young students learned
more to value every little thing and effort, they left a mark on this community, they taught a
child to speak English since he wanted to learn to look for better job opportunities even as
a child, the students were teaching a few words in English and little by little they moved
forward.

If I had to live in a situation (although it is not a choice for people who live in these conditions),
I would be in constant stress and sense of survival, basic needs like eating, drinking, having
a roof over my head, and so on. of things consume the focus of pursuing people's dreams
and educational goals, they become the second and last option. It makes you appreciate
the small comforts we often take for granted.

I think some ways we can help and the NGOs can help are, first of all promote the education
and awareness so we can inspire people to look for a growth and let them see what is
beyond their reality, education may be a solution for poverty.

NGOs can invest in job creation and skill development, programs that provide small loans
to empower individuals to start businesses, creating sustainable livelihoods and efforts to
improve infrastructure, can significantly enhance the quality of life for those areas.

As the students did, we can share the knowledge fostering a culture of understanding and
empathy. Also, NGOs can conduct research to understand the specific needs and
challenges faced by this communities.

"Living with a dollar" Reminds us of the importance of working for a more equitable world,
we can contribute to significant change. While individual actions may seem small, taken
together they have the power to make a significant difference in the lives of those fighting
poverty.
