Fire Suppression Standpipes Guide
A. Prior to final acceptance, the installing fire fighting specialist contractor shall provide at least
16 hours operational training to each shift of the Employer’s personnel. Each training session
shall include system operation, manual and functions, trouble procedures, supervisory
procedures, auxiliary functions and emergency procedures.
1.8 WARRANTY
A. All fire fighting and sprinkler system including fire pump set components furnished, and
installed under this contract, shall be guaranteed against defects in design, materials and
workmanship for the full warranty period which is standard with the manufacturer, but in no
case less than one (1) year from the date of system Taking Over.
1.9 MAINTENANCE
A. Include component list with manufacturer's reference numbers, descriptions of materials and
procedures for repairing and cleaning of finishes and cleaning frequency. Original certificates
shall be submitted separately to the Employer.
PART 2 - PRODUCTS
A. Materials and equipment used in the installation of Fire Suppression Standpipe System shall
be new and listed by UL Fire Protection Equipment Directory or FM Approved Guide, latest
edition. The standard products and the latest design of the manufacturer shall be used and
installed per their listing, approval or manufacturer.
B. Where two or more units of the same class of equipment are required, these units shall be of
the same manufacturer (e.g. couplings shall be from one manufacturer). All materials shall be
installed per their listing or approval and per the manufacturer's recommendation and
specification.
A. All above ground pipes shall be factory Galvanized steel ERW to ASTM A53, Schedule 40
Grade B, with atleast 1.5 times system’s working pressure.
B. All underground pipes shall be HDPE pipe conforming to FM 1613 and AWWA C906 with
minimum thickness of DR-9 ( SDR9, PN20, FM approved ) with atleast 1.5 times the system’s
working pressure. Underground pipes shall be jointed by only butt fusion by trained personnel.
C. Fire fighting specialty fittings shall be UL Listed and FM approved with minimum of 1.5 times
of the system required working pressure rating, and made of material compatible with piping.
D. Threaded Fittings: Fittings for 50 mm diameter and below shall be galvanized Ductile iron
threaded type with minimum of 1.5 times of the system required working pressure rating. All
fittings shall be UL/FM approved.
F. When pipes are assembled by screwed fittings or by "cut grooved", grove, with minimum of
1.5 times of the system required working pressure rating.
G. All piping of standpipe shall be complete and as specified under painting section.
H. Grooved Joint, Steel Pipe Appurtenances: At least 1.5 times the system’s working pressure.
I. Grooved End Pipe Couplings for Steel Piping: AWWA C606 and UL 213, rigid pattern, unless
otherwise indicated for steel pipe dimensions. Include ferrous housing sections, EPDM-rubber
gasket, and bolts and nuts.
2.3 PAINTING
A. All painting and fittings for fire protection shall be painted red as per Local Civil Defense and
NFPA requirements.
B. All painting for fire suppression standpipe system shall be complete s specified under painting
section.
A. The components of hanger assembly that directly attached to the pipe or the structure shall
be UL Listed and FM Approved.
B. All hangers shall be made of steel. Hangers shall be galvanized and UL/FM approved. The
spacing of the hanger supports shall be complying with NFPA requirements.
C. Piping shall be hung with hangers and supports independent of any other hangers, supports
systems, or devices. Non related materials may not be suspended from or attached to
sprinkler piping components.
D. Power driven supports or anchor shall not be used. Do not mix piping material and hanger
material of dissimilar metals.

3. Valves NPS 2-1/2 (DN 65) and bigger: Cast iron body with grooved ends.
4. Shall be indicating type.
5. Main Butterfly valves shall be installed with a tamper / supervisory switch and
interconnected to the building’s fire alarm system.
A. Flexible couplings shall be used to accommodate any movement in the pipe due to building
expansion or contraction. A proper study and calculation needs to be provided by the
specialist deligated by the contractor.

C. All products in sprinkler system shall be rated for 1.5 times of the system working pressure
with a minimum 175 psi.
A. All above-ground pipes shall be factory Galvanized steel ERW to ASTM A53, Schedule 40
Grade B with pressure rating of at least 1.5 times the system’s pressure. The pipes shall be
UL listed.
B. All underground pipes shall be HDPE pipe conforming to FM 1613 and AWWA C906 with
minimum thickness of DR-9 (SDR 9, PN 20, FM approved)with pressure rating of at least 1.5
times the system’s working pressure. Pipe joints shall be buttfusion and shall be carried out
only by trained personnel.

of the system required working pressure rating, and made of material compatible with piping.
D. Threaded Fittings: Fittings for 50 mm diameter and below shall be galvanized steel threaded
type with minimum of 1.5 times of the system required working pressure rating. All fittings
shall be UL/FM approved.
E. Fittings 65 mm diameter and above shall be galvanized mechanical grooved type. Grooved
fittings shall be UL/FM approved, with minimum of 1.5 times of the system required working
pressure rating.
F. When pipes are assembled by screwed fittings or by "cut grooved", pipework shal have
minimum of 1.5 times of the system required working pressure rating.

pipe when line pressure is below atmospheric. Cast iron body with bronze trim, nylon
reinforced diaphragm and threaded ends.
A. Air release valve shall be made of copper allow to BS 1400. The valve shall be tested to 2415
KPa.
2.13 SPRINKLERS

1. Rooms without Ceilings: Quick response upright sprinklers, glass bulb operated
rated 79 deg. C.
2. Rooms with Suspended Ceilings: Quick response pendent, semi-recessed, or con-
cealed type sprinklers as indicated, glass bulb operated rated 68 deg C for areas
other than kitchen. Areas that is normally warm such as Kitchen shall be quick re-
sponse pendent, concealed or semi-recessed type as indicated, glass bulb operated
rated 79 deg. C..
3. Car parking areas: Quick Response upright type, glass bulb operated rated 79 deg. C
4. Corridors with Suspended Ceiling: Quick response concealed, or semi recessed
sprinklers as indicated, glass bulb operated rated 68 deg. C.
5. Wall Mounting: Quick response sidewall type sprinklers glass bulb operated rated 68
deg. C for areas other than plant spaces, car parks, or kitchen, otherwise use 79 deg.

C. Sprinkler Finishes:
1. Concealed type sprinklers: Chrome plated with factory painted white cover plate or as
per Engineer's requirements.
2. Semi-recessed sprinklers: Chrome plated with chrome escutcheon or as per Engi-
neer's requirements.
3. Upright sprinklers: Chrome or bronze plated or as per Engineer's requirements.

F. The sprinkler heads shall be of spray pattern installed in an upright position or pendent posi-
tion as may be required where indicated in the drawing.
G. Installed in areas without false ceiling: Provide upright, glass bulb sprinkler head, 13 mm ori-
fice and chrome plated. The sprinkler shall be UL/FM approved.
H. Horizontal Sidewall Sprinkler: The automatic sprinkler designed for installation along with a
wall or lintel. The sprinkler shall be glass bulb type and shall have UL/FM approval.
I. Spare Sprinklers: A set of spare sprinkler heads shall be provided in a cabinet together with
sprinkler spanners as per NFPA 13-requirement for use in removing and installation of heads.
J. Horizontal Sidewall Extended Coverage Sprinkler covering 7300 mm: Shall use 20 mm orifice
with ¾" NPT inlet.

A. Provide UL Listed and FM approved switches on all control valves. PIV switches shall be
weather resistant and shall monitor target position. OS&Y switches shall monitor stem
movement and shall be complete with mounting J-bolts. Electric valve supervision switches
shall be installed for all internal (inside) and external (outside) fire protection valves 2 ½ inches
or larger.
B. Electric valve supervision switches shall be installed for all internal (inside) and external
(outside) fire protection valves 2 ½ inches or larger. The devices shall be electrical; single
pole, double throw; with normally closed contacts and include design that signals controlled
valve is in other normal position.
C. For wet pipe sprinkler systems, install a pressure operated water flow alarm initiation device,
unless otherwise noted on the contract drawings.
D. All vane type flow alarm initiation devices shall be equipped with an adjustable delay of audible
alarm initiation. Adjustments range shall be from 0 to 129 seconds. Vane type water flow
switch shall be as per Manufacturer's List.
E. Water flow vane type alarm initiation devices shall be labeled as to the correct orientation of
flow when mounted on system piping. When drilling of the system riser is necessary to mount
F. Where pressure operated water flow alarm initiation devices are used, any valve installed
upstream of the device on the alarm line shall be electrically supervised. Pressure operated
alarm initiation devices shall be an electrical supervision type, water flow switch retard feature.
The device shall include single pole, double throw, normally closed contacts and design that
operated on rising pressure and signals water flow.
G. A vane type water flow initiation device shall be installed on the air gap drain for all reduced
pressure backflow prevention devices.
H. Pressure Switch: System Sensor, Alarm contact rating 10A, ½ HP @ 125/250 vac. 2.5 @
6/12/24 VDC. Working pressure 300 psi (2070 psi) and maximum adjustment range 4-20 psi.
Differential pressure to be 3 psi, UL 4 x and NEMA 4 rated for indoor and outdoor use.
I. Low pressure supervision shall be installed on all dry pipe system and be connected into the
Fire Alarm System.
J. Any device is to be installed in a hazardous location defined by NFPA 70 shall be rated for
occupancy.

PART 3 - EXECUTION
3.1 RESPONSIBILITIES
A. The Contractor is responsible for the installation of the fire protection system in accordance
with these specifications and the contract drawings. The Contractor shall coordinate with
Architectural, Mechanical and Electrical, design and construction documents, to ascertain the
required information, to affect a properly designed and installed sprinkler system for the
building construction and occupancy classification. The installation shall reflect high quality
professional work that properly accounts for practical maintenance concerns and aesthetics,
B. The installation of the fire protection systems shall be complete with all necessary accessories
for proper operation and shall be accomplished by a specialist fire fighting contractor or
licensed company regularly engaged in this type of work, and in accordance with
requirements of the National Fire Protection Association Standards (NFPA) and the Authority
having Jurisdiction (AHJ).
C. The fire protection system installation shall be coordinated with the other trades (mechanical,
electrical, architectural and structural, etc)
D. The installation shall comply with all mandatory, advisory interpretations and recommended
applicable rules of the latest editions of the NFPA standards and the Authority having
Jurisdiction (AHJ).
