Channel Design

This document contains calculations for the design of three U-channels (UC1, UC2, UC3) to drain three catchment areas. For each channel, the catchment area, water flow, channel gradient and required channel size are calculated based on rainfall intensity charts. UC1 with a gradient of 1:8 and size of 375U is adequate to drain an area of 17761m2. UC2 with a gradient of 1:100 and size of 300U can drain an area of 350m2. UC3 with a gradient of 1:20 and size of 300U is sufficient for an area of 100m2.

CHECKING OF THE EXISTING U-CHANNEL UC1 (TOE)

A: Catchment area (A1) = 17761 m2

h1: Highest level in the catchment area = 39 mPD
h2: Lowest level in the catchment area = 0 mPD
h: Level difference = 39 m
L: Distance from h1 to h2 = 211 m
H: Average fall = 18 m/100m
t: Time of concentration = (0.14465*L)/(H0.2A0.1) Brandsby William's
6.4 min Equation

From Figure 1 of TGN 30,

Return Period 50 years

Time of Concentration (t) 6.4 min
Mean Rainfall Intensity (i) 220 mm/hr

Q: Maximum runoff = KiA/3600 (K = 1 for slope drainage)

= 543 L/sec
= 32562 L/min
say = 32600 L/min
Gradient of the channel (length/fall) 1 : 8

Q': Water flow from connected channel = 0 L/min

From Figure 1 of TGN 43,

Total water flow (Q+Q') 32600 L/min

and gradient of 1:8
Read channel required 375 U
Read velocity 6.35 m/s > 4 m/s

Therefore, 375 U with gradient 1:8 is adequate
