Kinematics Problems on Uniform Acceleration

The document contains 13 questions related to kinematics of uniform acceleration. The questions cover topics like displacement, velocity, acceleration and time calculations for objects in motion with uniform acceleration. Several questions involve projectile motion under gravity or constant acceleration. The answers provided calculate values for displacement, velocity, acceleration, time and other variables based on the given information in each question.

ASSIGNMENT ON KINEMATICS OF UNIFORM ACCELERATION

Q1. A balloon starts rising from rest from the ground with an acceleration of 1.25 m/s2. After 8 sec, a stone
is released from the balloon. Find the displacement, distance covered and time taken by the stone to
reach the ground after it is released from the ballon.

Q2. A particle is uniformly accelerated from A to B a distance of 192m and is then uniformly retarded from
B to C, a distance of 60m. The speeds of the particles at A and B are 4m/s and V m/s respectively and
the particle comes to rest at C. Express in terms of V only, the times taken by the particle to move from
A to B and from B to C.
Given that the total time taken by the particle to move from A to C is 22 sec. find
(a) the value of V
(b) the acceleration and the retardation of the particle.

Q3. Two trains A and B are travelling from station P to Q starting from P and stopping at Q. Train A has
constant acceleration a for (1/3)rd of time, constant velocity for second (1/3)rd of time and constant
retardation a for last (1/3)rd of time. Train B has same constant acceleration a for first
(1/3)rd of distance, constant velocity for 2nd (1/3)rd of distance & constant retardation a for last (1/
3)rd of distance. Find the ratio of time taken by train A and train B from P to Q.

Q4. A particle moving with uniform acceleration along a straight line passes three successive points A, B &
C where the distances AB : BC is 3 : 5 & the time taken from
A to B is 40 sec. If the velocities at A & C are 5 m/s & 15 m/s respectively. Find
(a) the velocity of the particle at B ; (b) acceleration of the particle ; (c) time taken to cover B to C
(d) total distance from A to C.

Q5. A boy is throwing balls at a regular time interval of 1 s . When he is about to throw the fifth ball, the first
ball comes back to his hands. [Take g = 10 m/s2]
(i) Each ball remains in air for the time interval equal to ____________ .
(ii) The velocity with which each ball is thrown is given by __________.
(iii) The maximum height attained by each ball is ______________ .

Q6. From the top of a multi-storeyed building 40 m tall , a boy projects a stone vertically upwards with an
intial velocity of 10 ms–1 such that it eventually falls to the ground. (i) After how long will the stone
strike the ground? (ii) After how long will it pass through the point from where it was projected? (iii)
What will be its velocity when it strikes the ground? Take g = 10 ms–2.

Q7. A falling stone takes 0.2 seconds to fall past a window which is 1 m high. From how far above the top
of the window was the stone dropped ?
Q8. As a car passes the point A on a straight road its speed is 10 m/s. The car moves with constant
acceleration a m/s2 along the road for T seconds till it reaches the point B where its speed is
v m/s. The car travels at this speed for a further 10 sec till it reaches the point C. From C it travels for
a further T seconds with constant acceleration 3a m/s2 until it reaches a speed of 20 m/s at point D.
(i) Find v
Given that the distance between A & D is 675 m find
(ii) a & T.

Q9. From the top of a tower, a ball is thrown vertically upwards. When the ball reaches h below the
tower, its speed is double of what it was at height h above the tower. Find the greatest height
attained by the ball from the tower.

Q10. A body thrown up from the ground vertically up passes from the height of 10.2 m twice in an interval
10 sec. Its initial velocity was……..m/s and its time of journey upwards was……s
(g = 10 m/s2).

Q11. A steel ball bearing is released from the roof of a building. An observer standing in front of a window
120 cm high observes that the ball takes 0.125 sec to fall from top to the bottom of the window . The
ball continutes to fall & makes a completely elastic collision with side walk & reappears at the bottom
of the window 2 s after passing it on the way down. How tall is the building ?

Q12. A passenger who just missed the train stands on the platform, sadly watching the last two boggies of
the train. The second last boggy takes time 3 sec. to pass by the passenger, and the last one takes time
2 sec. to pass by. How late is the passenger for the departure of the train? Assume that the train
accelerates at constant rate

Q13. An astronaut on the starship Enterprise is roaming around on

a distant planet. He drops a rock from the top of a cliff and
observes that it takes time t1 = 2 sec to reach the bottom.
He now throws another rock vertically upwards so that it
reaches a height h = 10 m above the cliff before dropping
down the cliff. The second rock takes a total time t2 = 2 sec
to reach the bottom of the cliff, starting from the time it leaves
the astronaut’s hand. The planet has a very thin atmosphere
which offers negligible air resistance. What is the value of
acceleration
(in m/s2) due to gravity on this planet?
