@: Why did you choose teaching as your profession?
A: Teaching is a profession which creates all other profession, Teaching Is one of noblest profession, it has scope to bring
‘out talent. This profession | chose from day one after | graduated. But in the very 1st day | couldn't get the opportunity, so
| was in industry for almost 3 years but my passion was always for teaching, Subsequently | got opportunity in my alma
mater REC Rourkela | joined as a faculty there. Also teaching is in my gene. My father, elder brother, sister are teachers, so
| was very curious to join this profession.
Q: What is your long-term vision for IIITDM?
A: | joined IIITDM on July 2017. | went through Detailed Project Report (DPR) of institute, every institution gas got its own
mandate and IIITDM is mandated for producing a different class of graduates compared to other tech schools like IIT NITs.
‘Our thrust is to produce graduates who are embedded with core engineering, design and manufacturing skills Hence, they
will be suitable for complex problem solving, designing and the way of solving it for viable solutions. My whole thrust of
two and a half years is to direct the institutions result in this track by putting effort from faculties, students, all stake
holders of this institution and also bringing alumni into the forum. My effort is there to see IIITDM as one of the technical
schools, center of excellence at par with world class institutions. It is a big dream but | will try my best to make this
institution noticeable in India's map and then subsequently the world map. That is my vision.
Q; How IIITDM is collaborating with industries to make students ready for corporate world?
A: IIITDM is an autonomous institution and has got liberty to change its curriculum keeping the demand of present-day
Industry. Every year or alternate year we look into curriculum by collaborating with industries and academia experts. We
form a committee and see what are the revisions that can be put into. Either to include new professional elective or bring
changes to existing curriculum. In addition, | also requested our faculty to put the recent trends in any subjects and to do
this we do industry collaboration very extensively. After my joining here we have around 5 industry MoU from where we
have received projects and also our faculty driven industry collaboration. In addition, we have also collaborated with
another 10 industries where they have signed MoU to give internship to our students and as you know our curriculum has
extensive internship program where students are spending 5 months. Now we have planned that students will spend 8
months in industry. This gives students the complete industry exposure before graduation.
Q: What makes IIITDM stand apart from IIT and NIT?
A: IIT and NIT are technology bound institutions and the students spend most of the time on the departmental core as key
activities. As far as IIITDM is concerned, we take flavor from technical schools as well as design schools. In addition to core
courses we are offering 6 design courses starting from 2nd semester onwards to 6th semester. Students learn conceptual
design, behavioral design, structural design to the prototyping and get an opportunity to learn about the product whether
it Is new or existing causing new thoughts to grow in mind. | strongly feel that we are going 1 mile ahead as compared to
IITs and NITS. So our students are quite different from theirs and | am 100% sure when my students or our student are
facing along wit IIT and NIT they will definitely stand apart and they will have an edge over them.
Q: IIITDM has one of the best sports facilities. What are your plans in that direction?
A: Todays students are much ahead compared to earlier generation and there are lot of avenues ta learn. The students
hardly spend 50-60% of their time for curriculum rest 40 % they are free, And second thing is present day students are
much smarter and talented compared to earlier days where youth were putting their complete thrust into studies. If | look
back things in IIITDM and NIT Rourkela every student has got additional talent. Thirdly students are interested in overall
360° growth and only academics is not sufficient. These are the three things which needs to be considered and when my
student goes out very satisfactorily, they become our ambassadors and positively influence others to join IIITDM. Hence,we are trying to maintain good indoor sports facility, but we are also trying to improve outdoor sports facility.
Unfortunately, we couldn't have a swimming pool, | have contacted a nearby place were there is swimming pool for
contract basis so that students can learn. | give utmost importance to extracurricular facilities; students are encouraged to
Participate in inter IiIT and other competitions. If the students come with proposals then | am open to that. Students here
have music club; | was requesting to add more musical instruments so more students can participate,
Q: What's your story? How did you get where you are today?
A: Inever thought that at first day of teaching profession | should aspire for director, aspiration is different. The fact is that
It should be a journey. Starting from day one I joined as a faculty | did Justice to my profession. | strengthened my teaching
learning abilities then as soon as | joined, | started my higher studies both masters and PhD. Again, doing high quality
research is not straightforward | first started my journey for research and guided masters, PhD and all students and
wherever | have taken the responsibility | have tried to put best of my potential into it. Similarly, in the process, when | was
growing in the institute NIT Rourkela, | was assigned several admin responsibilities. i.e. when you are a part of institution it
is your responsibility also to see what are the different places you can contribute. | have served as HOD, warden of hostel
& automation cell incharge. My dream was to automate most of the activities of institution because | believed automation
brings efficiency, effectiveness and transparency to stakeholders of institutions whether it is student, faculty, parents and
Industry. Luckily, | got opportunity in 2004 to become incharge of automation cell and | served till 2017. | am proud to say
that there we developed indigenous ERP system starting from registration to all academic processes. we even went to level
of doctor prescribing medicine through machine. This even allowed to
generate data on medical trend for research and analysis for students.
Subsequently | was incharge or examination and later served as Dean of
academics in NIT Rourkela and during any positions whichever | held, | tried
to make a difference. You may ask what new you have done or what great
Whenever you are going to a
eer enor ns
you have done, remember whenever you are going to a particular position
understand the system and learn what new things can be associated
because every system has scope for improvement you have to identify them,
and work towards it. | just did my level best in all my roles. Later on | got an
opportunity to serve in IIITDM Kancheepuram in 2017 and | am putting my
efforts in considering all stakeholders and moving towards vision of

institute.
: What is your passion other than teaching?
A: One of my passion other than teaching is listening to music, especially old ones. But | am not a singer. Second, | play
table tennis but sometimes | am not able to get time for that and thirdly to work with youngsters for upliftment of society
and | have requested to have NSS activities here.
Q: How can youngsters prepare themselves for future. Studies or job?
A: Everything is one’s personal choice, students must first extract information about serving in industry. | don't say industry
Is bad, teaching is great or vice versa. if you are interested in research don't think you get that opportunity only in teaching
now all industries have got their research labs. What ever you wish to become like manager or researcher they will have
different requirement. When you want to go for teaching you should be multi-talented to teach as well as research and
manage. But again, don't worry about it, you may not identify if you have these capabilities or not as you are young. But
you must be informed what are the things your profession demands and you should be mentally prepared before you join
there, | joined teaching because of my own passion, | know that | could do higher studies, research, guide students, go for
patents and was mentally prepared. Call of the day is to do excellence and to do it, you need hard work and for that
motivation is must.FIT INDIA MOVEMENT
