Input and Output Devices
Data entry
The process by which human-readable data is
converted into a machine-readable form.
Data input
The process of transferring machine-readable data
into the computer system.
Source data automation
Capturing and editing data where the data is
originally created and in a form that can be directly
input to a computer
Input Devices
Input Devices accept data and instruction from the user or
from another computer system.
These are use to give command to the computer system.
To receive data and instructions in a form that can be
understood by the computer.
Types Of Input Devices
Keyboard Automatic Teller Machine
Mouse (ATM)
Trackball Light pens
Joystick
Pen drive
Touch sensitive screens
Microphone
Bar code scanners
Webcam Point Of Sale (POS) devices
Voice recognition devices Magnetic Ink Character
Digital computer cameras
Recognition (MICR)
Terminals
Printers
Scanning devices
Optical data readers
Bluetooth devices
Keyboard
It is a set of keys which are used to send
the computer an interrupt request, telling
the CPU to accept the keystroke.
The system software respond to interrupt
by reading the code from keyboard buffer.
The system software passes the scan code
to CPU.
Mouse
The mouse is a pointing device. We use it to move a
graphical pointer on the screen.
The mouse can be used to issue commands, draw,
and perform other types of input tasks.
Using the mouse involving 5 techniques- pointing,
clicking, double clicking, dragging, right-clicking.
Joystick
A Joystick is a personal general control device
consisting of a handheld stick that pivots about one
end and transmits its angle in 2 or 3 dimensions to a
computer.
Apart from controlling games, joysticks are also
used for controlling machines such as aircrafts,
cranes, trucks, powered wheelchairs and some zero
turning radius lawn mower.
Touch Pad
Touch pad is an input device commonly used in
laptop computers. They are used to move the cursor
using motions of the user’s finger. They are a
substitute for a computer mouse.
These are touch sensitive devices which gets
activated on a finger touch.
Touch pad are used to give instructions directly
through monitor.
Scanner
Scanner can copy a printed page of text or a graphic
into the computer’s memory, freeing from creating
the data from scratch.
The flatbed scanner is the most common in the
offices.
Other type of scanner are – planetary scanners,
digital camera scanners, 3D scanners, drum scanners
etc.
MICROPHONE
A microphone, colloquially called a mic or mike (both
pronounced /ˈmark/), is an acoustic-to-electric transducer
or sensor that converts sound into an electrical signal.
In 1876, Emile Berliner invented the first microphone
used as a telephone voice transmitter.
Microphones are used in many applications such as
telephones, tape recorders, hearing aids, motion picture
production, live and recorded audio engineering, in radio
and television broadcasting and in computers for
recording voice, VoIP, and for non-acoustic purposes
such as ultrasonic checking.
WEBCAM
Webcam is the short form for web camera.
It us a type of input device which helps in taking
photos and transferring them in the computer.
Webcams are used while having conferencing or
having a photo chat.
Magnetic Ink Character Reader(MICR)

OUTPUT DEVICES
An output device is any piece of computer hardware equipment used to
communicate the results of data processing carried out by an
information processing system (such as a computer) to the outside
world.
In computing, input/output, or I/O, refers to the communication
between an information processing system (such as a computer), and
the outside world. Inputs are the signals or data sent to the system,
and outputs are the signals or data sent by the system to the outside.
The most common input devices used by the computer are the
keyboard and mouse. The keyboard allows the entry of textual
information while the mouse allows the selection of a point on the
screen by moving a screen cursor to the point and pressing a mouse
button. The most common outputs are monitors and speakers.
Types Of OUTPUT DEVICES
• Monitor
• Printer
• Pen drive
• Compact Disk
• Plotters
• Snapshot printers
