Medusa is an icon of ancient greek mythology, known for her terrifying powers of turning people into stone. But if you take Medusa out of the hero-vs-monster context, she was a young preistess who was turned into a monster as punishment for being raped. The way Medusa is displayed in ancient stories, as well as modern films, book and play, shows us a lot about gender, sexuality and how society responds to womanhood.
