Chert is a microcrystalline silica roc, but it is found in limestone bedrock rather than chalk. The mineral is most often used to give strength to bone china after grinding but can also be used as a roadstone. Near Bakewell it can be found in large beds. As we continue exploring a limestone Mine used by the Royal Air Force as ammunition Storage from the 1930’s through to the 1990’s , we found the mine was reworked for limestone in the 2000’s and as late as the 2010’s. now remains derelict with many machinery and artefacts left behind from its later working period along with evidence of the old RAF presence
