Phonemic Awareness {Isolating Sounds} for Kindergarten & First Grade Remediation
Sound Boxes are used for sound segmentation. Children will dot the box for each sound under the picture of the object. They will then take their finger quickly under the dots and say the sounds together. For instance, “shark” would have 4 sounds so they would put 4 dots. They would then say all the sounds together.

Heggerty Substitution
For sound substitution, a great activity would include cvc cards and magnetic letters.Students would look at the word while saying the letter sounds for the first picture, then saying the word. For the second picture they would substitute the first letter to create a new word. For instance, “dog” would become “log”. This is great for rhyming words as well.

The sound stretching activity is for sound blending. Like a slinky, the word will be stressed out and then said very fast (like the slinky bouncing back) The teacher says the sounds of a word slowly, encouraging students to listen carefully. After hearing the sounds, students blend them together to say the complete word, reinforcing their ability to combine sounds..
