To create spheres for pieces like this glazed pomegranate, I use three different sizes of styrofoam balls. This way, I can create progressively smaller domes that stay smooth and even. If I tried to just shape the flat circle around the smallest styrofoam ball, the clay would ripple and fold — but taking the domes through the three stages of shaping helps me have more control over the final sphere.
