Symbols- Water In this novel, water was expressed as a biblical reference. First off, this image represents how water created life, as in Jay Gatsby. James Gatz went into the water as himself, but he came out as Jay Gatsby, the same way Jesus' baptism gave Jesus life. The author wrote, "He was a son of God (Fitzgerald, 98)." This quote expressed the similarity between Jay Gatsby and Jesus, referring to their incidents with water. Both Jesus, and Jay Gatsby had began their life in water.
