One of the most important religious sites in Sparta, the site hosted Sparta's brutal initiation ritual in which young boys were beaten by rod to prepare them for military service. Because Artemis is related to the ideas of nature and nourishment, she is also thought to be fruitful. Young women seen honouring the cult were considered to be celibate.
