I usually use the Wilton #4B for my border piping, but when I’m decorating a larger cake like the 9-inch cake, I tend to go with a 6B instead. I like the size of it, I feel like it matches the cake better. I also pipe in sections instead of trying to go all the way around in one go—just because when the piping bag is too full, it gets heavy and harder to control.  • In this video we are going to teach you some basic techniques using a star tip. All you need is a 1M tip or another large star tip. We will use these techniques to do 6 easy finishes on cakes. We've chosen these simple designs that will help you cover some potential problem areas or issues you might be having if you are just starting out and still working on getting a smooth finish on your cakes. If you have an uneven or messy top, try the Basic Star. If you don't yet have a clean transition and sharp edge where your top and sides meet try a star border. The Ruffle Star is great for marking slices to make cutting even pieces easier. Try the Zig Zag lines if you are having problems with your sides.
