Why is the suction pipe larger than the discharge in a centrifugal pump?  Every pump engineer knows the golden rule: never treat suction carelessly. But have you ever wondered why suction piping is always designed larger than discharge piping?  The answer lies in fluid dynamics, pump reliability, and decades of field experience.  Physics explained:  On the suction side, the pump is vulnerable. The fluid is at low pressure, and even a small drop can cause cavitation.  A larger suction diameter reduces velocity, minimizes friction losses, and maintains the required Net Positive Suction Head (NPSHa > NPSHr).  On the discharge side, velocity is less risky since pressure has already been added by the pump. Smaller discharge pipes often make sense for cost and layout optimization.
