Russel Wright Toy Dish Set - yup, I had this set

I have to take a minute to tell you about Russel Wright, one of my favorite modernists. Wright, an industrial designer, is most well-known for his American Modern dinnerware collection, which he designed in 1939. The set featured above is from that collection and I've been scooping up for a pittance at thrift stores around DC and Baltimore, and on ebay. People say Russel Wright "revolutionized the American home and how people lived there." Gone were the days of formal, ten piece settings...

During this past weekend, I was introduced to a collection of vintage pottery created by the iconic American designer, Russel Wright. The owner of this particular collection appropriately described the set as being ‘organic’ in look and function, and it’s these organic qualities that makes Wright’s work timelessly attractive.

A little background on the original designers of Bauer and American Modern:BauerThe J.A. Bauer Company pioneered the idea of mix-and-match dinnerware. Founded by Andy Bauer, who originally hailed from Kentucky, where he opened his first factory, the company took off when Bauer moved to L.A. and became part of the Arts and Crafts movement. Bauer hired innovative designers and his company, which also had a plant in Atlanta, made everything from vases to dinnerware in vibrant colors.
