With hand embroidery there are a number of embroidery stitches to use for outlines, my personal favorite is the Split Stitch. You start with a simple, small straight stitch over the outline of your project, then you come up through the back of the fabric a short distance ahead of that first stitch, and much like the Backstitch, go back down through the front of the fabric. Only with the split stitch you push the needle through the center of that previous stitch. Repeating this process using small stitches creates a very smooth line, perfect for any outlines within an embroidery project. Use on the edge of your fill stitches like a satin stitch for a crisp line.
