Dr. Stephanie Ridgway • Physical Therapist on Instagram: "Shoulder impingement occurs when the rotator cuff (specifically the supraspinatus tendon) gets pinched in the subacromial space. The subacromial space is the space between the humerus and the acromion (top part of the scapula). Inflammation or irritation of the rotator cuff causes swelling and that swelling leaves less space for the rotator cuff tendons, which causes them to get pinched in the space between the bones. Overhead movement of rotation of the shoulder usually makes the pain worse. Here are 3 tests you can try if you think you may be experiencing shoulder impingement. If the pain increases during the tests, it’s likely that you have some sort of impingement going on.
