The Key To A Faster Birth? Lie On Your Side During Labor
Changing positions frequently and moving freely during labor can help with pain, keep things progressing & help baby move & rotate through the pelvis Flying cowgirl - creates space at the top of the pelvis Exaggerated side lying - epidural friendly and a great resting position that opens the pelvis. Can also place it between knees of your side. Make sure to switch every 30 minutes. Supported all fours - rock back and forth during contractions to manage pain. You can also play around with leg positioning for external/internal rotation and have your partner apply counter pressure more easily here. Baby is also well aligned in your pelvis.

For the birth biomechanics nerds here (🙋‍♀️), here’s a bit more background into my favorite side-lying pushing position (Side Lying IR/Internal Rotation) that we posted about the other day. ⏪ The pelvis is attached to the leg via soft tissues (muscles, ligaments...) so when we move the leg, we move the pelvis! So learning what movements create what types of space really empowers you as a birth pro to be VERY strategic in what you suggest. No longer do you need to reach into your ‘bag of tri...

More on labor stalls below 👇 ➡️Labor stalls occur when you are in active labor but then you experience either slowed contractions, contractions without dilation or lack of baby descent. ➡️ There are many reasons this can occur, but often it’s due to baby not being in an optimal position for birth! You can perform the Miles Circuit in labor as well as during the weeks leading up to labor! ***please note left side-lying is lying on your left side with your right leg supported by pillows, the camera view is flipped ***

A peanut ball can be magic 🪄 During my own recent labor I used a peanut ball in the hospital bed when I needed a quick rest after moving around the room for awhile but still wanted to help my labor progress. I personally used the first and second positions shown in this video! Here’s a brief explanation of each position ⬇️ 1. Between the knees with hips extended — helps to open the pelvic inlet when baby is high in the pelvis 2. Asymmetrical side-lying — helps to open the mid pelvis 3. Between the feet with knees together — helps to open the pelvic outlet when it’s time to push

Pushing side lying OR, how to turn a squat on its side!
I’m a sucker for a good side-lying pushing position, and this one is definitely my go-to. 🏆 🤓 Why it works: The use of Internal Hip Rotation (ankles wider than knees) and Deep Hip Flexion (knee coming in towards body) creates more space at the bottom of the pelvis from side to side AND front to back. This is why it is one of my go-tos for when my client has an epidural, needs a change of pace, is struggling to find a good rhythm, or is just tired and needs to rest. Though the peanut ball i...

😴TROUBLE SLEEPING DURING PREGNANCY?😴

During pregnancy, especially towards the 3rd trimester, it can be really challenging to find the best position to be comfortable enough to sleep

Try these side-lying positions with different pillow placement:

💤Pillow between the knees - keeps your hips aligned and prevents twisting
💤Pillow tucked in behind the low back - prevents your back from twisting backwards
💤Towel Roll tucked in underneath the belly - supports the belly
💤Pillow tucked in underneath the shoulder - to better support your arms and shoulders

Ah, yes - I’ve been *that* doula asking my clients to try something new … especially when they are comfortable! 😬If I notice contractions slowing down, less intense, or falling out of pattern - that’s usually when I’ll see if we can try something new. Usually about every 20-30 minutes.

Sometimes, you will welcome the change - it keeps time moving along with something new 🤣

Sometimes, If I know you are better having the rest - I won’t bring it up.

👍🏻Generally, changing positions every 20-30 minutes will promote labor progress, help you use gravity to your advantage, help decrease the perception of pain, facilitate fetal descent into the pelvis, and keep you occupied.

💉Even in bed with an epidural, you can change how your body is positioned with peanut balls, side lying positions
