There are some places I’ve visited that feel like a distant dream. That can only really be experienced, no matter how beautifully captured through writing or photography. Lamu is definitely one of them.

Lamu Cultural Festival is a celebration of both the past, present and future. The festival celebrates the beliefs and traditions that are the heart and soul of the communities living in Lamu and the surrounding islands. Usually held in the last week of November, the festival is very popular and the agenda reflects the richness of Swahili culture.

Lamu is a UNESCO World Heritage site in Kenya. It is easily one of East Africa’s best-kept secrets. This island on the Kenyan coast offers stunning Swahili architecture, beaches, and a peaceful, car-free atmosphere where donkeys and dhows are the main modes of transport. There are lots of narrow alleyways, ancient mosques, and lively markets in Lamu Old Town, but you can also unwind by the turquoise waters of Shela Beach. 🌴🌊🐪
