Notes: • These blending techniques work with water-based brush pens. I used Tombow Dual Brush Pens. • Some of my favorite papers for brush pen blending are Canson Bristol paper and Strathmore Mixed Media paper. • To clean off your pens, scribble them on paper until the color comes back clean. None of these techniques will ruin the pens; since they’re water based, they’re meant to blend!

Supplies Used: • Sakura Koi waterbrush • Canson XL watercolor paper • Tube watercolor paints (Reeves and Cotman brands) • Paper towel Notes: • You can also fill a water brush with ink or watercolor. Then when you paint or press the barrel, ink/watercolor would squeeze out instead of water. It can be a fun way to get color-changing effects, or write without having to keep picking up paint. You wouldn’t be able to clean the brush the same way, however. It might be best to only fill with a small amount of liquid; then when you’re finished, rinse the barrel out and put water in to squeeze and purge the brush. • You can also buy water brushes in different tips, like a flat wash instead of a round like I used.

A great way to create letter blending art is to blend marker on marker because you don’t need to have paintbrush/waterbrush and you don’t need to wait for it to dry. Here are some tips when doing Marker to Marker Blending with Brush Pens! Supplies: • Water Based Markers - I’m using Tombow Dual Brush Pens • Marker Paper or you can use Smooth Bristol Paper - I’m using Canson Marker Paper • Paper Towel • Optional: Fineliners or Gel Pens for details Tips: • Letter your word first with a light grey brush pen. When having a lettering guideline, it make’s it easy to do color blends because you’re essentially coloring in your letters. • One way to blend colors is to drag down a darker color with a lighter marker. Have you used the Magic Water Pen? I got mine on Amazon and it’s such a fun way to letter with watercolors. You can do block letters like I did or do faux calligraphy. All you need to do is put water inside the pen and then dip it into your paint as if it’s a paintbrush. I like to make sure the brush tip is fully coated with paint to make sure I get good coverage on my paper. Give it a try and let me know what you think!
