Reviving Pre-1950 Local Typography Booklet
Reviving Pre-1950 Local Typography is a research-based school typographic project focused on rediscovering and restoring historical letterforms connected to the places where we were living. Using books, photographs, printed ephemera, and archival materials dating from before 1950, each student selected a local typographic source and developed a complete typeface from it. Two of the typefaces were based on lettering found in Caldas da Rainha, while the third was developed from historic Ecuadorian banknotes. The project involved careful restoration and refinement of the original letterforms, analysis of their visual and structural features, and documentation of their historical context. Each typeface was then applied within the book to demonstrate its contemporary use. The final publication brings together research, typographic design, and editorial application, highlighting typography as a form of cultural preservation and visual storytelling.
