Dutch was a generic word for German lowlands- eg. Pennsylvania "Dutch" (proud GERMAN Mennonites!) Holland developed AFTER the German lowlands- spreading out from major German cities. Dutch windmills are simpler, of cheaper materials & primitive construction, less capacity vs. English & German. Polder (dyke)= German word. Germans likely learnt swamp reclamations via Romans & their Swabi & Bawari laborers. Rome 400AD, most Roman soldiers= German. Mueller (Müller)= very German surname.

Oldest Windmill In The World

Stembridge Tower Mill in High Ham, Somerset, England, is the last remaining thatched windmill in England. The stone tower mill was built in 1822 with four floors & the thatched "cap". In 1894 a steam engine was installed & after the mill was damaged in a storm in 1897 or 1898 this became the sole source of power. Commercial use ended in 1910. The mill is now owned by The National Trust and underwent a £100,000 restoration in 2009 & was re-opened later in the year.
