The Battle of the Nile (1-3 August 1798) was a ,major battle fought between the Royal and French navies during the Napoleonic Wars. The British fleet under Lord Nelson attacked the French in the night when the French were moored along the banks of the Nile. During the chaotic melee the French flagship, L'Orient, exploded killing nearly all of its crew. The battle was the only real setback for Napoleon whilst he was in Egypt.
