Heard on Main Street: Start the year right. Take time to relax and enjoy the little things.
How can our president suggest he deserves a peace prize as he declares he will capture Greenland, now causing Denmark to demand that our country needs to respect its sovereignty.
Christmas at my son’s house was a miracle in itself. Their younger daughter had a painful sore throat, making a few of us feel a bit cautious. Happily for all, two days before Christmas, the doctor declared it to be mono, not a scary version of flu. Then the older daughter who had promised to get up midmorning on the 23rd to put up the Christmas tree slept in till after noon. Her dad took care of that.
Then all was well, because the mom managed to not only produce a delicious holiday feast, but also entertained her mother-in-law and a sister-in-law as well as her sister, her father, and his friend, as well as her brother and his wife. A festive time was had by all.
I was rather useless, but I did enjoy reading a new book, “The Heir Apparent,” by Rebecca Armitage. The story is about a young woman whose grandmother is the Queen of England. The girl is third down the line to inherit the role. She has moved to Australia, where she has been studying medicine. She is brought back home because her father and brother had a terrible ski accident in Switzerland.
Recently I read “Last Days of Marilyn Monroe: A True Crime Thriller” by James Patterson and Imogen Edwards-Jones. Questions are definitely raised. It is the carefully researched story of a beautiful but very vulnerable young woman. Yes, she married and divorced, but she never lost the devotion of one husband, baseball legend Joe DiMaggio. I must admit that as a kid I thought he was just the best of baseball. Now I have to say, I think he still is.
Winter seems to have truly settled in, but we did have a pretty Christmas.
You must try to get to the Community Climate Discussion this weekend. It is important to learn about “M.V. Solid Waste Stream, Recycling, and Food Waste.” There are some opportunities for action. It is on Saturday, Jan 10, 1:30 to 3 pm at the Oak Bluffs library. You will be surprised by what you did not know.
On Tuesday, Jan. 20, at 6 pm, the Vineyard Haven library presents an evening of music with the local duo of Jeremy Berlin on piano and Eric Johnson on guitar at the Katharine Cornell Theatre, upstairs at 51 Spring St. Free.
Big bunches of birthday balloon wishes go out Thursday to Allyson Wajda. Saturday belongs to David Burt. Happy birthday on Tuesday to Donna Paulson, and then on Wednesday to Tyler Paulson.
Heard on Main Street: If your New Year’s resolution is already gone, try a new one. Make peace with your past so it won’t mess up the present.
