Early/Absentee Voting

All Vermont voters are eligible for early/ absentee ballots. 

Early/Absentee Voting

  • Absentee ballots for annual meetings are available at least 20 days prior to the election.
  • Absentee ballots for presidential primary (March), state primary (August), and general (November) elections are available 45 days prior to the election. However, in the case of a special election in August or November, Town ballots may not be ready until 20 -30 days prior to the election due to state laws. 
  • Want a mailed ballot? Go to your Vermont Voter Portal or fill out the Absentee Ballot Request Form.
  • Early voting in the Town Clerk's office will end at noon the day before every election.
  • Early voting ballots may be returned by mail to 171 Bridge Street, WRJ VT 05001, by visiting Town Hall or by using the 24/7 drop box located near the entrance to Town Hall. The secure ballot drop box is available 24/7 until 5:00 PM the day before an election. 
  • Mailed ballots must arrive at the Clerk’s Office by 5 PM the day of the election; postmarks don’t count.
  • Hartford Town Hall is CLOSED on Town and School District election day in March.

General Election Ballots

New laws enacted by the Vermont Legislature state that early mail-in ballots are to be mailed to all active voters in the State of Vermont for any General Election.

  • If you do not wish to cast your ballot this way, please DO NOT dispose of your ballot. You can return it to the Town Clerk’s Office in person or via the 24/7 secure drop box and indicate on the envelope that you wish to vote in person on Election Day.  
  • Bring your own ballot (BYOB) to the polls. Simply proceed to your designated check-in table, where a poll worker will check you in, collect any mailing materials, and direct you to the voting booths
