The fashion week circuit can get repetitive — how many times can one go to Cipriani or, more recently, Chez Margaux? So it was fun to head into Village East, the Angelika movie theater in the East Village, which had been taken over Wednesday night by Myth Magazine. After grabbing beer and popcorn, the crowd shuffled into the main theater, where Myth was hosting a screening of Gonzalo Hergueta’s documentary “The Designer Is Dead,” about designer Miguel Adrover.
“I started this project five years ago. When I found Miguel and I found this story, I found this story that was almost like a legend. This Spanish guy came into the city and kind of completely disrupted fashion week,” Hergueta said ahead of the screening. “And when I started researching it, it was so difficult to find any information on him. So one day I found a little email and I sent him an email. I never thought it was going to lead us anywhere, but it led us to making a movie with him over five years.”

“The only thing I’m going to say about Miguel is that after five years of working closely with him, the enigma for me is still there,” he continued. “I have way more questions than I have answers. And this movie just wants to shine a light on a story that happened in the same neighborhood 25 years ago, and also an intimate portrait of these artists that live in rural Mallorca. I hope you enjoy it and I hope it sparks an interesting conversation in the after party.”
After the film, the crowd spilled out into the theater’s lobby, where the concessions stand had been turned into a proper bar and a disco ball spun as Laura Branigan’s “Gloria” belted out.
Guests included Myth magazine founders Chloë Sevigny and Haley Wollens, along with Hari Nef, Paloma Elsesser, Nan Goldin and Blu DeTiger.
