Biography

The Hon. Nathan (Nhan) T. Vu is a judge on the Orange County Superior Court in California. He was appointed to the bench by Governor Jerry Brown on June 27, 2018, filling a vacancy created by the elevation of the Hon. Thomas M. Goethals to the California 4th District Court of Appeal.

Prior to his appointment, Vu was a deputy attorney general with the California Attorney General’s Office, a position to which he was named in 2014 to 2018). Before that, he spent time as a partner at Willenken, Wilson, Loh & Delgado, representing public utilities, high net-worth individuals, and Fortune 500 companies in complex business and tax litigation (2006 to 2014). Vu also held positions as an assistant (2001 to 2004) and an associate (2004 to 2006) professor of law at Chapman University, Dale E. Fowler School of Law, where he taught civil procedure, civil rights, and international business transactions.

Vu earned a B.A. from Harvard University in 1992. He then completed a J.D. at Yale Law School in 1995. He was licensed to practice in California (1997).

After graduating from law school, Vu began his legal career as a judicial law clerk to the Hon. Alex Kozinski of the United States Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit. He served in that capacity until 1996, at which time he entered into private practice as an associate at Latham & Watkins (1996 to 1997), Russin & Vecchi (1997 to 1999), and Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher (1999 to 2001). His practice encompassed commercial and international litigation as well as appellate law matters.

His memberships have included the Vietnamese American Bar Association of Southern California.

Vu was a resident of Fullerton, California, at the time of his appointment.

He is registered as a Democrat.
