The Sea Table, a new book put out by the Fishermen’s Preservation Trust with Catherine Walthers, is way more than a cookbook, it is a celebration of the fishing industry and the people who work in it. It’s also a perfect holiday gift, so check out the story.
And if you are recovering from a food coma after Thanksgiving, we have a very good weekend read for you while you are immobilized on the couch. Check out the life of Woodrow (“Woody”) Williams, a U.S. Marine who served in Vietnam and never really stopped fighting the war or fighting on behalf of his fellow veterans. He died on Veterans Day.

These days, Island fishermen face pressures that range from rising costs and stringent regulations to competition from industrial fleets far larger than any vessel tied up to Island docks. There remains the question of how commercial fishing on-Island will survive. Into that moment comes “The Sea Table,” a new cookbook curated by the Martha’s Vineyard Fishermen’s Preservation Trust with Catherine Walthers. The book is about preservation, but also industry, history, and culture. It’s a tribute to the waters that surround this Island in the Atlantic, and the fishermen who work hard to bring seafood to local tables.
The book features 75 recipes curated from Island cooks and fishermen, involving 19 different local species and 21 fishermen, and each book purchase supports the Fishermen’s Preservation Trust mission to ensure that sea-based culture, livelihood, and food remain strong on the Island. Read more |

Woodrow (“Woody”) Williams, a U.S. Marine veteran who fought in the Vietnam War, died on Veterans Day. After his service, he underwent health complications from Agent Orange poisoning and post-traumatic stress disorder from his wartime experiences. Back home, Williams would have to fight through the bureaucracy of Veteran Affairs to get the benefits he was owed. He would strive to help veterans who experienced similar roadblocks and became a leader in the veteran community. After Williams’ death, his family is now carrying his torch. Phyllis and Vanessa Williams, Woody’s wife and daughter, have set up a fund so they can award grants to programs helping veterans. Currently under consideration are the Island Housing Trust’s veterans housing project in Oak Bluffs and the Marines Toys for Tots program. Read more |
