Dillon to Present at November ARRC Meeting

Todd Dillion will present the program at the November meeting of the Akron Railroad Club on Friday (Nov. 28).

Todd’s program will feature steam trains, trolleys, and blimps.

The meeting will begin at 8 p.m. in the fellowship hall at the New Horizons Christian Church, 290 Darrow Road (Ohio Route 91) in Akron.

The program is expected to begin at approximately 8:30 p.m. following the business meeting.

The November meeting also is the club’s annual meeting and officers will be elected for calendar year 2026.

ARRC President Dillon earlier announced he will not run for office so the club will be getting a new president.

Those present at the November meeting can also make their reservations for the Dec. 6 End of Year Banquet.

The event will be held at the New Era Restaurant at 10 Massillon Road in Akron. The event will begin at 5 p.m. and attendees will order from the menu and pay for meals and beverages on their own. The club will not be collecting any money for this event.

The program will be presented by Dave Beach and will feature images he made during a railfanning trip to western Montana and eastern Idaho.

ARRC October Meeting is This Friday

October 21, 2025

Greg Warren will present the program at the October meeting of the Akron Railroad Club on Friday (Oct. 24).

His slide program will show a 1976 trains operating on the Chesapeake & Ohio Railway from Hinton, West Virginia, to Clifton Forge, Virginia. Greg also will have images made that same year at the Cass Scenic Railroad along with some other railroad scenes.

The meeting will begin at 8 p.m. in the fellowship hall at the New Horizons Christian Church, 290 Darrow Road (Ohio Route 91) in Akron.

The program is expected to begin at approximately 8:30 p.m. following the business meeting.

Bowler to Present at September ARRC Meeting

September 22, 2025

Peter Bowler will present the program at the September meeting of the Akron Railroad Club on Friday (Sept. 26).

His program will highlight BNSF operations on the former Santa Fe mainline in Arizona between Seligman and the Painted Desert.

He will also show images of Santa Fe 4-8-4 No. 4751 in 2002 on an excursion from Los Angeles to the Grand Canyon.

Woods to Present at August ARRC Meeting

August 21, 2025

Don Woods will present his second program of the year at the Akron Railroad Club’s August meeting on Friday (Aug. 22).

His slide show program will have highlights from the 1999 rail festival held at the California State Railroad Museum in Sacramento.

Don’s program will feature a ferry move of former Southern Pacific 4-8-4 No. 4449, which is painted in the Daylight passenger livery, from Portland, Oregon, to Sacramento.

Also in the program will be images of exhibits at the museum, and photos made on the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad.

The meeting will begin at 8 p.m. in the fellowship hall at the New Horizons Christian Church, 290 Darrow Road (Ohio Route 91) in Akron.

ARRC July Meeting is Friday

July 21, 2025

The Akron Railroad Club’s July meeting will be Friday, July 25 at the New Horizons Christian Church, 290 Darrow Road (Ohio Route 91) in Akron. The meeting will begin at approximately 8 p.m.

The program will be presented by Brian Szemon and is titled Bridges & Signals 2010 to Present. The program will highlight Amtrak’s Southwest Chief and the soon to be retired semaphore signals located along the BNSF (former Santa Fe) route via Raton in New Mexico.

Brian normally uses his cellphone’s camera to take railroad photographs.

The program is expected to begin at approximately 8:30 p.m. following the business meeting.

Sanders to Present at June ARRC Meeting

June 24, 2025

Former Akron Railroad Club President Craig Sanders will present the program at the June meeting on Friday, June 27, 2025.

The digital program is titled The Other New Castle: Past and Present on Norfolk Southern’s New Castle District.

The NCD runs from Fort Wayne, Indiana, to Cincinnati and its heritage is Nickel Plate Road and Pennsylvania Railroad.

The program will show modern day NS operations along the line in Indiana and Ohio with plenty of glimpses of the past when the NKP, Pennsy, Penn Central and Norfolk & Western ran trains on some segments of the present day NCD.

Also shown will be some Amtrak, short line operations and railroads that once intersected with the present day NCD, including Erie Lackawanna, New York Central, Conrail, Chesapeake & Ohio and CSX.

The meeting will begin at 8 p.m. in the fellowship hall at the New Horizons Christian Church, 290 Darrow Road (Ohio Route 91) in Akron.

Don Woods to Present at May ARRC Meeting

May 21, 2025

Don Woods will present the program at the Akron Railroad Club’s May meeting on Friday (May 23).

He plans to show slides of past steam excursions in Virginia, West Virginia and elsewhere.

The meeting will begin at 8 p.m. in the fellowship hall at the New Horizons Christian Church, 290 Darrow Road (Ohio Route 91) in Akron.

The program is expected to begin at approximately 8:30 p.m. following the business meeting.

Durfee to Present at April ARRC Meeting

April 20, 2025

The Akron Railroad Club will hold its February meeting on Friday, April 25 in the fellowship hall at the New Horizons Christian Church, 290 Darrow Road, (Ohio Route 91) in Akron. The meeting will begin at 8 p.m.

Roger Durfee will present a program titled Sand and Snow that will feature Florida railroads. The program also will feature short line railroads with some Class 1 railroad action.

The program is expected to begin at approximately 8:30 p.m. following the business meeting.

ARRC Members Night Set for Saturday

March 25, 2025

The Akron Railroad Club will hold its annual member’s night and pizza party on Saturday (March 29). The event will replace the March meeting.

Doors for the event will open at 5:45 p.m. It is being held in the fellowship hall of the New Horizons Christian Church, 290 Darrow Road, in Akron. Pizza will be served starting at 6:30 p.m.

Attendees are invited to show digital images, slides or video during the program. Equipment for all three forms of media will be provided.

Attendees are asked to donate $5 to help defray the cost of the pizza. They are encouraged to bring their favorite non-alcoholic beverage and a snack to share. A limited supply of soft drinks and water will be provided.

ARRC February Meeting is This Friday

February 25, 2025

The Akron Railroad Club will hold its February meeting on Friday, Feb. 28 in the fellowship hall at the New Horizons Christian Church, 290 Darrow Road, (Ohio Route 91) in Akron. The meeting will begin at 8 p.m.

Members are reminded that they can pay their 2025 membership dues at the meeting and update any changes to their contact information.

Dave Mangold is scheduled to give the program, which will include a report on the investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board of the February 2023 derailment of a Norfolk Southern train in East Palestine. He also plans to show images of a trip to 12th Street and Roosevelt Road in Chicago along with some recent freight activities covering the Kanawha Railroad and the Iowa Interstate. 

Note that we said Dave is scheduled to give the program. Due to a time conflict he might not be able to make it. If that is the case the program will be images presented by ARRC President Todd Dillon.
