Mechanical Problems Hinder Amtrak Trains

December 10, 2025

Mechanical troubles have plagued Amtrak operations in the past couple of weeks, particularly involving trains originating and terminating in Chicago.

Trans magazine reported on its website that trains have been canceled or endured hours-long delays.

Two of those involved trains serving Ohio including the Floridian and Cardinal.

On Monday the eastbound Floridian halted at the Hammond-Whiting, Indiana, station for what was initially reported as mechanical issues involving a locomotive but later described as “readjusting a coach car to the end of the train.”

By the time No. 41 reached South Bend it was more than six hours late.

Last Friday (Dec. 5) the westbound Cardinal developed a short in head-end power cables west of Hinton, West Virginia.

The train was terminated in Charleston, West Virginia, and passengers were taken by bus to Chicago. The trainset deadheaded to Chicago.

The Trains report said problems with head-end power was the common denominator in most of the mechanical issues.

Bridge Work to Affect Amtrak’s Cardinal

December 6, 2025

Bridge construction in Washington will lead to a change in the schedules of some Amtrak trains, including the Chicago-New York Cardinal.

The construction project involves the CSX-owned two-track Long Bridge over the Potomac River between Washington and Alexandria, Virigina.

Over the next five years a second two-track bridge will be constructed over the river adjacent to the CSX bridge, which Amtrak and VRE trains currently use.

Starting Jan. 12, 2026, a work window will reduce operations on the current bridge between 8:15 a.m. and 1 p.m. Also affected will be the Virginia Railway Express commuter service.

Amtrak and VRE are adjusting the schedules of affected trains.

The westbound Cardinal currently is scheduled to depart Washington at 10:59 a.m. on Wednesday, Friday and Sunday, but that will change to 11:40 a.m.

Times at intermediate stations also will change as well. Train 51 is scheduled to arrive in Indianapolis at 5:15 a.m. and depart at 6 a.m., which suggests that the schedule could be tightened so that the train operates on its current schedule from Indianapolis to Chicago.

However, part of that dwell time is devoted to on some days adding equipment from the Beech Grove shops to be ferried to Chicago.

Amtrak has not yet released new schedules for the affected trains.

Although the Chicago-Miami Floridian also crosses the Long Bridge, its schedule in both directions falls outside the work window.

Virginia Passenger Rail Authority Executive Director D.J. Stadtler told Trains magazine that one of the two tracks through the area will remain closed until 1 p.m., while the other track will reopen to allow three Amtrak trains to use the bridge.

Stadtler said he hope the single tracking will only last for a few months.

Other Amtrak trains affected include the Palmetto to Savannah, Georgia; the Carolinian to Charlotte, North Carolina; and the Silver Meteor to Miami.

A train to Richmond, Virginia, and one train to Norfolk, Virginia, will be suspended and replaced by express bus service.

CSX Coal Train Derails in West Virginia

August 4, 2025

A CSX coal train derailment early Sunday morning in West Virginia led to the cancellation of Amtrak’s Cardinal in both directions between Huntington, West Virginia, and New York.

No injuries were reported in the derailment, which involved a 220-car train that derailed near St. Albans, located about 10 miles west of Charleston.

Amtrak chartered buses to move passengers to points east of Huntington on Train No. 50, which originated in Chicago on Saturday.

That equipment turned on Sunday and departed Huntington Sunday night for Chicago.

The coal train derailment occurred on the CSX Kanawha Subdivision.

Passing an Indiana Farm

May 24, 2025

Amtrak’s westbound Cardinal was running 36 minutes late when it approached Linden, Indiana, en route to its next scheduled station stop in Lafayette. On the point is P42DC No. 147 which appears to have been given two different shades of paint on the upper part of its nose.

Train 51 has was sporting what has long been its standard consist of two Amfleet II coaches, an Amfleet food service car, Viewliner sleeping car and a Viewliner baggage-dorm car. Earlier this spring Nos. 50 and 51 were running with a third coach, but that appears to have been dropped for now.

On some days the Cardinal has an ALC-42 Charger on the point, but not today. This image was made on May 24, 2025.

Cardinal to Get Rails and Trails Guides

April 23, 2025

Amtrak trains will be hosting the Trails and Rails program of the National Park Service this summer.

The program features volunteer guides offering commentary and one-on-one discussions with passengers aboard regional and long-distance Amtrak trains.

New to the program this year will be commentary provided aboard the Chicago-New York Cardinal between Charleston, West Virginia, and Clifton Forge, Virginia. That includes the train’s route through the New River Gorge.

The days that guides will ride the tri-weekly Cardinal will depend on guide availability, but Fridays are seen as most likely.

One guide will provide narration while another guide will mingle with passengers. Guides have ridden the Cardinal in previous years although not of late.

The volunteer guides may ride as far east as Staunton, Virginia, if the Cardinal is operating on time.

Route segments are designed so guides can make a round trip in one day.

No other Amtrak routes serving Ohio or neighboring states are slated to have guides aboard this summer.

Additional Cars Coming to Cardinal, Floridian

February 26, 2025

Two Amtrak trains serving Ohio will gain additional cars this spring. Starting March 5 from New York and March 6 from Chicago the Cardinal will gain a third Amfleet II coach.

A third Viewliner sleeping car will be added to the Floridian starting April 7 from Miami and April 9 from Chicago.

The additional cars are part of plans to expand capacity on several long distance routes.

Rough Weekend for Amtrak’s Ohio Trains

February 9, 2025

It has been a rough weekend for Amtrak’s Lake Shore Limited and Floridian.

No. 49/449 on Friday was stopped for seven hours between Utica and Syracuse, New York.

Amtrak’s service advisory did not give a cause for the delay, but it was seen on the Elkhart, Indiana, webcam with just one P42DC locomotive on the point.

No. 49 arrived in Chicago at 4:51 p.m. on Saturday, 6 hours, 39 minutes late.

Late arriving equipment often means a late departure later that day. And so it was for Nos. 48/448, which departed Chicago Union Station at 1:49 a.m., 4 hours, 19 minutes late.

Early Sunday morning the eastbound Lake Shore Limited was projected to arrive in Cleveland at 8:46 a.m., 3 hours, 8 minutes late.

The Floridian didn’t do much better. It lost four hours between Toledo and Elkhart on Saturday and arrived in Chicago at 3:11 p.m., 6 hours, 26 minutes late and less than two hours before the inbound Lake Shore Limited.

On Saturday night, the Floridian departed Chicago Union Station at 7:51 p.m., 1 hour, 11 minutes late. It arrived in Cleveland at 3:19 a.m., 1 hour, 24 minutes late.

As for Sunday’s westbound trains, the Floridian departed Miami 50 minutes late on Friday and lost more time en route. No. 40 departed Cleveland at 4:31 a.m., 1 hour, 32 minutes late.

The Lake Shore Limited did much better,  leaving Cleveland at 4:05 a.m., on Sunday morning, a mere two minutes late.

Another Ohio Amtrak train, the Cardinal, also had a rough Saturday. It departed Chicago eastbound at 7:21 p.m., 1 hour, 26 minutes late. Earlier in the day No. 51 arrived in Chicago 38 minutes late at 10:38 a.m.

Locomotive Failure Grounds Amtrak’s Cardinal

February 7, 2025

Locomotive failure led Amtrak to terminate the westbound Cardinal in Cincinnati on Thursday morning.

The train’s lone locomotive became disabled in Kentucky between South Portsmouth and Maysville.

No. 51 arrived more than three hours late at Maysville where it waited for a CSX relief engine to tow it to Cincinnati Union Terminal.

Passengers arrived in Cincinnati nearly 11 hours late and were put aboard buses to continue their trip.

The equipment was moved in a deadhead move to Indianapolis where it was to be serviced at the Beach Grove shops.

Passengers for the eastbound Cardinal that was scheduled to leave Chicago early Thursday evening were taken by bus to Indianapolis Union Station to board their train.

Unspecified issues also affected the westbound Floridian on Thursday. It arrived in Chicago 6 hours and 46 minutes late.

Most of the delay occurred on Tuesday in Florida. The late Chicago arrival on Thursday afternoon at 3:31 p.m. led to a delay in departing Chicago Thursday night.

Amtrak’s website reported that Train 41 departed Chicago Union Station 3.5 hours late at 10:11 p.m. That put it behind the eastbound Lake Shore Limited, which left Chicago Thursday at 9:42 p.m, 12 minutes late.

CSX Derails 15 Cars in Indiana

January 20, 2025

The derailment occurred at 7:10 a.m. on the West Passing siding northwest of Monon, Indiana. No cause of the derailment was given.

Amtrak’s westbound Cardinal was terminated at Lafayette, Indiana, and the equipment sent to Indianapolis.

The eastbound Cardinal that was to depart Chicago originated in Indianapolis and passengers were sent by bus from Chicago to Indy.
