Nos. 40/41, which stop in Alliance, Cleveland, Elyria, Sandusky and Toledo, have been cancelled over the entirety of their routes on Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

Other trains that have been cancelled during the same time period include the Empire Builder (Chicago-Seattle/Portland), Texas Eagle (Chicago-San Antonio), City of New Orleans (Chicago-New Orleans) and Borealis (Chicago-St. Paul, Minnesota).

Additional train cancellations could occur. The storm is expected to dump heavy snow and bring bitter cold temperatures.

In an unrelated move, a pair of Wolverine Service trains between Chicago and Detroit (Pontiac) were cancelled on Wednesday due to equipment issues.

Cancelled were Trains 350 and 355, which operate eastbound in early morning and westbound in the evening.

Amtrak Sets Michigan Service Suspensions

September 10, 2025

Amtrak plans to provide bus service on two Michigan routes on Sept. 15-19 when trains will be canceled to accommodate razing of two coaling towers that straddle the tracks.

The structures are located at Michigan City, Indiana; and Augusta, Michigan.

Affected with be the Blue Water (Chicago-Port Huron) and Wolverine Service (Chicago-Detroit [Pontiac])

On the Detroit route buses will replace train No. 352, a 2:18 p.m. departure from Chicago, and train No. 351, an 8:43 a.m. departure from Pontiac.

In a service advisory Amtrak said lack of available bus equipment has meant that no bus substitution will be made for Wolverine Service Nos. 354 and 355. On Sept. 19, no bus substitution will be provided for No. 350.

Since May 5, Nos. 350 and 353 have only operated on Friday, Saturday and Sunday due to track work being conducted in Michigan.

Starting Sept. 2, Wolverine Service trains have been originating or terminating in Troy rather than Pontiac due to a Canadian National track project that will continue through the end of September.

The New York-Pittsburgh Pennsylvanian will operate on modified schedules through Aug. 14.

CSX Track Work Sidelines Floridian

July 21, 2025

Unfavorable operating conditions have adversely affected operations of Amtrak’s Floridian and Lake Shore Limited.

Amtrak began imposing cancellations last Friday of the Floridian through Aug. 3 due to “track infrastructure work” along its route by host railroad CSX.

In a service alert, Amtrak said that on July 18, 25 and Aug. 1, No. 41 is cancelled with no alternate transportation provided.

On July 19, 20, 26, 27, and Aug. 2-3 Train 41 is canceled between Chicago and Washington on Saturday, originating in Washington on Sunday. No alternate transportation will be provided between Chicago and Washington.

No. 40 will terminate in Washington on July 18, 19, 25, 26 and Aug. 1-2 with no alternate transportation provided between Washington and Chicago.

As for the Lake Shore Limited, the month-long bus substitution between Boston and Albany-Rensselaer is continuing indefinitely and may extend into next January.

News reports indicated that a sinkhole under host CSX tracks west of Pittsfield, Massachusetts, will require extensive work and expense to repair.

Elsewhere equipment shortages among other issues has affected some trains.

The Chicago-Grand Rapids, Michigan, Pere Marquette was cancelled for one day last week after the train to Michigan became disabled in Benton Harbor.

One Chicago-St. Louis Lincoln Service roundtrip has been cancelled for more than a week with buses substituted for the train.

Floridian Won’t Make it to Chicago Today

Amtrak’s westbound Floridian won’t be making it to Chicago today (April 6).

The passenger carrier plans to terminate No. 40 in Toledo due to it operating more than 13 hours late. An Amtrak service advisory did not indicate what caused the delays.

Early today the Amtrak website showed that No. 40 arrived in Washington at 4:37 a.m. It is projected to reach Cleveland at 2:33 p.m. and Toledo at 4:29 p.m.

Presumably the equipment will be turned in Toledo and make up tonight’s eastbound Floridian.

It was among a spate of service disruptions Amtrak has experienced in the Midwest in recent days.

Due to severe weather on Thursday night and early Friday morning, Amtrak cancelled the Texas Eagle between St. Louis and Marshall, Texas; the City of New Orleans over the length of its route; and the southbound Illini between Champaign-Urbana and Carbondale, Illinois.
