Unfavorable operating conditions have adversely affected operations of Amtrak’s Floridian and Lake Shore Limited.
Amtrak began imposing cancellations last Friday of the Floridian through Aug. 3 due to “track infrastructure work” along its route by host railroad CSX.
In a service alert, Amtrak said that on July 18, 25 and Aug. 1, No. 41 is cancelled with no alternate transportation provided.
On July 19, 20, 26, 27, and Aug. 2-3 Train 41 is canceled between Chicago and Washington on Saturday, originating in Washington on Sunday. No alternate transportation will be provided between Chicago and Washington.
No. 40 will terminate in Washington on July 18, 19, 25, 26 and Aug. 1-2 with no alternate transportation provided between Washington and Chicago.
On July 20, 21, 27, 28 and Aug. 3-4 Train 40 will be canceled between Miami and Washington on Sunday, originating in Washington on Monday, with no alternate transportation provided between Miami and Washington.
As for the Lake Shore Limited, the month-long bus substitution between Boston and Albany-Rensselaer is continuing indefinitely and may extend into next January.
News reports indicated that a sinkhole under host CSX tracks west of Pittsfield, Massachusetts, will require extensive work and expense to repair.
Elsewhere equipment shortages among other issues has affected some trains.
The Chicago-Grand Rapids, Michigan, Pere Marquette was cancelled for one day last week after the train to Michigan became disabled in Benton Harbor.
One Chicago-St. Louis Lincoln Service roundtrip has been cancelled for more than a week with buses substituted for the train.
